Door Plates

( )

Door plates are always the final "step" to finishing off the job,  They connect the gaps between the laminates fitted in different room to make to effect of the floor flow throughout the house.

You can chose doorplates to connect floors that are level each side (T-section), or with a slight height difference (ramps) and larger height differences we advise to go for the unistar profile due to its ability to adapt to any height change up to 17mm.

The product comes with all the extra bits needed to fit the job easily, and are available in all of our 80 different colours manufactured here on site in Mersey Flooring.

Door Plate FAQs

Door plates, also known as transition strips or door bars, are designed to cover the area where two different types of flooring meet beneath a door.

These are commonly made from metal or wood and help create a smooth transition between rooms or surfaces for a seamless look. They could be used to connect tile and laminate together, or carpet and tile, etc.

In their most practical use, they prevent tripping by covering the edges of floors that could catch on people's shoes and cause falls.

Door plates also help to protect the quality of your floors by shielding the raw edges of carpet or laminate from damage, such as peeling or fraying. All floors require expansion gaps, which transition strips cover to make your floors look more appealing.

Plus, they also stop dirt and grime from getting underneath your floors, preventing mould and bacterial growth.

There are a few types of doorplates you can buy for your floors. The right one for you depends on the height of your floor, whether each floor is level with the others, and the type of finish you’re looking for.

  • T-section profile: These are better for when your floors are level, and you want to bridge the gap between two different types of floors.
  • Ramp profile: These are designed for floors with a small height difference. The ramp provides a slight slope to prevent a sharp step.
  • Adjustable door plates: These are perfect for floors with a larger height difference, as they allow you to adjust them to match the floor height. Our Unistar profiles are designed for height differences of up to 17mm.

End profiles: These door plates provide a neat finish at the edge of laminate, wood, or vinyl, where it meets a patio door or another type of surface.

Yes! Door plates are designed to cover where one floor ends and another begins.

By doing so, you end up with smoother transitions between different rooms and safer floors that won’t cause tripping hazards. If your doors are low to the ground, it can also decrease the risk of the door catching on the edge of the flooring if it starts to lift or warp.

Yes, most floors naturally require an expansion gap to allow for flexibility under constant movement and foot traffic.

Floating floors are a common example, since they expand and contract with changes in temperature and humidity. If a doorplate were to pin the floor down, it wouldn’t be able to move, causing bubbling and peaking as it expands and gapping as it contracts.

The required size of your expansion gap will depend on the floor material, the room size, and factors such as underfloor heating systems. As a rough guide, laminate typically requires an expansion gap of around 10mm, and LVT a 5 mm gap.

Yes, doorplates can be used on bathroom floors. Once installed, they can help prevent water from getting underneath floors and causing bubbling or moisture damage.

Self-adhesive and screw-fixed door plates differ only in how they’re installed.

With self-adhesive transition strips, you install them by removing the backing tape on the adhesive strip on the underside of the plate. These can be cut to length and degreased for a secure installation.

On the other hand, screw-fixed door plates are installed by screwing them into the subfloor. These take longer to install but offer a longer-lasting finish.
