Paint on Laminate Flooring

How to get paint off laminate floor

If you’ve just installed your new laminate floor, congratulations! Whether revamping one room or the whole property, you’ve just kitted out your home with the most affordable, durable and stylish flooring on the market.

You’ll want to protect your new flooring for the foreseeable future, avoiding liquid, paint spills and moisture as much as possible. But at Mersey Flooring, we know accidents happen.

If you’ve decorated the walls, trims or furniture and notice a dried paint spill, don’t panic: follow our four methods for removing paint from your laminate flooring.

What is the safest way to remove paint from laminate flooring?

The safest way to remove laminate flooring is to use non-abrasive chemicals. For example, detergent, vinegar, or ammonia-free degreasers.

Laminate products are made from fibreboard materials and wood byproducts, pressed together to mimic the look of natural materials like hardwood or stone.

These boards have multiple layers, including a durable wear layer, a printed design layer and a core layer covered with a protective coating. Laminate flooring is available in countless rustic and modern designs but must be regularly maintained for guaranteed longevity.

1. Homemade Solutions

Creating a homemade solution is often cost-effective and safe for removing paint from laminate floors. Mix equal parts warm water and dish soap or a mild detergent to create a gentle cleaning solution.

  1. Fill a bucket with warm water.
  2. Add a small amount of mild dish-cleaning solution. Mix it gently!
  3. Dampen a soft cloth or sponge with the solution and ensure it's not overly wet.
  4. Gently rub the paint stain in a circular motion, applying moderate pressure.
  5. Repeat the process until the paint stain is completely removed.
  6. After removing the stain, rinse the area with a sparing amount of clean water. Dry thoroughly.

While this method is generally safe for laminate flooring, avoid saturating the floor with excessive water: it may seep into the seams and damage your boards.

2. Degreaser

If the paint stain on your laminate floor is more stubborn, you can use a degreaser to break down the paint particles. Choose a degreaser specifically formulated for laminate surfaces and follow these steps:

  1. Dilute the degreaser with water according to the provided instructions.
  2. Apply the diluted solution to a clean cloth or sponge.
  3. Gently rub the paint stain, allowing the degreaser to work on the paint.
  4. Continue rubbing until the paint starts to loosen and dissolve.
  5. If you have successfully removed the stain, use water in a sparing amount to wipe away the degreaser. To avoid water damage, dry thoroughly with a soft cloth.

3. Window Cleaner

Luckily, window cleaners are typically non-abrasive and safe for laminate surfaces.

Follow these steps to use window cleaner for paint removal:

  1. First, select a window cleaner that is safe for laminate flooring.
  2. Spray the window cleaner directly onto the paint stain.
  3. The cleaner must sit for a few minutes to soften the paint and make removing it easier.
  4. Gently scrub the stain with a soft cloth or sponge, applying moderate pressure.
  5. Wipe away the loosened paint particles.
  6. Rinse the area with some clean water and dry the spot thoroughly.

Ensure the window cleaner doesn't contain harsh chemicals or ingredients that may damage your new laminate flooring.

4. Nail Polish Remove (sparingly!)

Exercise caution when using nail polish remover on your laminate floors. Some nail polish removers contain high acetone levels, which can damage the surface of your laminate.

  1. Check the label of the nail polish remover to ensure it's acetone-free or safe for use on laminate.
  2. Take a clean cloth or cotton ball and apply a small amount of polish.
  3. Gently rub the paint stain, being careful not to rub too aggressively.
  4. Continue rubbing until the paint starts to dissolve.
  5. Rinse the area with some clean water and dry the spot thoroughly.

5. Scraper

Scrapers can be used as a last-ditch effort to remove paint stains.

If done improperly, you could damage your laminate, so following the instructions carefully is essential.

  • Select a plastic or wooden scraper to avoid scratching the laminate surface.
  • Hold the scraper at a shallow angle, approximately 30 degrees, to avoid gouging the floor.
  • Gently scrape the paint stain, moving in the direction of the floor's pattern.
  • Be patient and avoid applying excessive force to prevent damage.
  • Clean any excess paint chips away with a small amount of clean water. Dry thoroughly.
